“If there’s an event, [EHS] is going to be there. And this is so important for the work that we’re doing.”  – Dr. Ned Ketyer, Pediatric Alliance.

Half the battle, sometimes, is just showing up.

That’s why we put a reporter in Western Pennsylvania to cover fracking and air quality and cancer rates and environmental injustice. Because you need a journalist to be at the community meetings and ask the hard questions, to march into a politician’s office and challenge assumptions, to be with the parents and kids and bear witness as they struggle with asthma and illness.

That’s what we do. That’s why we’re looking to expand our work into other under-reported regions – media deserts – where journalism has retreated and residents are left largely on their own in what is often a lopsided fight with entrenched interests.

It’s working: Our Pittsburgh reporter, Kristina Marusic, has hoovered up a host of awards for her work in the region, including the inaugural Madoff Award of Environmental Excellence from the Group Against Smog and Pollution (GASP) in 2019.

“She accurately writes about what she is hearing, not just from the experts but from concerned residents. If there’s an event, she’s going to be there. And this is so important for the work that we’re doing,” said Dr. Ned Ketyer of the Pediatric Alliance.

“If we don’t have media coverage, people aren’t going to know,” he added. “Kristina is a face at these events. She’s going to be there, she’s going to be writing about it. Her presence is important.”
