The Organization
Environmental Health Sciences is an international nonprofit headquartered in Bozeman, Mont., and with editors, scientists and journalists across the United States and Europe.
EHS exists to accelerate the growth of scientific literacy around our health and environment. We drive good science into public policy and discussion on these issues, including climate change, environmental justice, air and water pollution, energy and land development,
Endocrine disrupting chemicals – hormone hijackers – are a particular speciality, and we do this work via a number of avenues:
- Commissioning and contextualizing science
- Aggregating consequential news and commentary
- Publishing award-winning journalism
- Distributing daily, weekly and monthly newsletters
- Partnering with other groups
We are solutions-focused and equity-driven.
We work with and within science and journalism to elevate power within communities and create opportunities so that race, gender, and/or ZIP code do not predict your health or environment.
We believe that progress is never a result of scientific discovery alone; it requires other forces: crusading journalism, advocacy, politics.
EHS programs
EHS runs a variety of programs to achieve its mission of driving good science into public policy and discussion around our health and environment. Our core strategy:
- Alert the public to critical threats
- Advance news cycles on core topics
- Solve entrenched problems with interdisciplinary collaborations
Science
EHS helps teach scientists to communicate, mentors early career scientists, and does its own science: EHS chief scientist Pete Myers has published more than 120 peer-reviewed articles.
Journalism
EHS publishes two websites featuring original journalism and commentary. And we send newsletters to more than 12,000 subscribers worldwide featuring top news on our environment and health.
Our journalism has won awards from the Society of Environmental Journalists, the Association of Health Care Journalists, the Society of Professional Journalists and the Oakes Foundation, to name just a few.
Partnerships
We cannot make change alone. We partner and collaborate with a variety of engaged players, from corporations to NGOs to universities and scientific societies.
The opportunity
The Engagement Director is a new position, created to shake up EHS’ public-facing activities, challenge how we communicate science, and change the fundamental “stuckness” of environmental health.
- Be a skeptic
- Routinely challenge communication channels and approaches
- Drive impact
The Engagement Director joins EHS at a time of growth and expanded opportunity – and in fact is essential to building that energy as EHS marks its 20th anniversary and expands to new work, markets and audiences.
We value diversity, work in the open and do everything we can to give back to the journalism, research and nonprofit communities. EHS is an equal opportunity employer, and we’re actively seeking to increase diversity in our operation and across the fields of science, communications and journalism. We encourage applications from communities traditionally underrepresented in science and news media.
If you have any questions about this role before applying, you may book a 20-minute hiring hotline call with EHS director Douglas Fischer.
